A behavioral assessment is a research-based approach to understanding the antecedents, behavioral components and consequences of observable behaviors using various unbiased assessment methods. The major focus of behavioral assessments is to be able to measure individual changes, identify circumstances that direct problematic behaviors and better comprehend individualistic occurrences. Behavioral assessments can be either direct or indirect measures of behavior. Some examples of indirect behavior assessments would be self-report interviews, questionnaires and rating scales. Indirect behavioral assessments are less time consuming but they may not be as effective since they are personal recollections of past occurrences. Direct assessment behaviors would be self-monitoring, behavioral observations and the experimental control of specific variables to test a hypothesis. This type of assessment is great for obtaining an abundance of information but it is also time consuming and requires a well-trained observational staff. Targets of direct behavioral assessments methods include observing individual behaviors first hand and understanding the connection between the individual and their environment. Direct behavioral assessments also allow the observer to establish behavior chains and record changes in behavior over time.
